The Kingsley at Eversley

The Kingsley bed and breakfast offers smart and efficient accommodation in an Edwardian country house built by the Kingsley family towards the end of the nineteenth century. The Reverend Charles Kingsley was a nineteenth century theologian, polemicist and writer of several books including the children's classic The Water-Babies which was popular with children well into the twentieth century. After a high profile life in the academic world including a famous challenge to Cardinal Newman he retreated to the relative calm of his Eversley parish and this is where he wrote The Water-Babies and Westward Ho! The Kingsley was built for his daughter, Rose Georgina Kingsley, herself an author and keen horticulturist who planted most of the trees now flourishing in their maturity in the grounds. This is where she wrote "Eversley Gardens and Others" (pub.1907) a charming account of her garden and plants.
